I joined the founder-engineer team as the design lead, working directly with engineers without predefined specs or a PM—navigating ambiguity to bring clarity to traders cutting through the chaos.

Problem
Even experienced traders couldn't find critical information fast enough to act
Stakeholders initially wanted to add more data because they couldn't find what they needed. Through interviews with senior engineers (who were also pro traders), I discovered the real issue: while they could eventually find information, they couldn't locate critical data quickly enough when seconds mattered.

Feedback showed that the core problem wasn’t a lack of information, but the speed of comprehension. Showing all data might feel “safe” at first, but data overload slows decisions. To address this, I took the following actions to enable faster decisions and more scalable development.

Modular design to speed up delivery
Modular design to speed up delivery
After the information was structured, I started designing core modular components to speed up the design and iteration process since it’s a data-heavy product. This allowed us to move quickly while scaling the pace of development, and we shipped the final design with 10+ core pages and features, including real-time trading, an AI monitor, and personal performance dashboards.

Validation by traders: The 10-second test
"Can a trader find and act on this within 10 seconds?" — I kept this principle throughout the design process. In testing sessions, traders confirmed they could identify signals and execute within seconds, showing that clarity enabled speed, and speed built trust in the platform.

No clear requirements: asking 'why' to navigate ambiguity
Key Learning
No clear requirements: asking 'why' to navigate ambiguity
Without a defined specification, asking "why" became critical. Questioning assumptions and uncovering root causes through team collaboration helped me move quickly through ambiguity. This reinforced that designers thrive not by having answers, but by asking questions that uncover them.
